My gym membership is up for renewal and I can’t believe that 12 months of trying to get fit and healthy have gone by so quickly. I had been wanting to join a gym for years, but I never had the confidence to do it or just stopped before signing that membership form. Finally last year a switch seemed to flip and I decided to just stop thinking, start doing and sign up. So what have I been up to?
Joined a gym
I looked around and decided to sign up for a Bodyline gym membership. With one just around the corner from my work, a corporate discount and access to 17 leisure centres, including 11 gyms, it seemed like the right membership at the time and with gyms all over I couldn’t make any excuses.
Walking is free and one of the easiest forms of exercise you can do and if like me you have 2 dogs, you can’t avoid it. I usually take my 2 on a forty minute walk everyday and if the weather is nice, I love a good walk with my fiancé at the weekend.

This comes in handy if you want to keep track of your steps. I got this little gadget at Christmas from my parents and it’s been a great way to track my steps/activity and any exercise I do. I aim for 10,000 steps each day, track any exercise I do in the gym and track my sleep. I follow Weight Watchers and it syncs with the WW app and converts your steps into activity points.
My fiancé has always been keen for us to be more active and workout together, so for Valentines Day this year I decided to buy us some rackets and we now try and play tennis together every week. It’s a great workout and it’s also really fun. We can end up playing for 2-3 hours and there is something so satisfying about collapsing on the sofa together afterwards.
No, watching videos on YouTube isn’t exercise, but you can find loads of videos you can follow for all different levels of fitness and best of all they are free! I discovered Pilates and Yoga on YouTube and I try and do at least one of these each week. In the privacy of my own home, I don’t have to worry about making fool of myself or about my terrible attempts at trying a downward dog (that’s one for you yoga fans). I discovered Pop Pilates on YouTube and I love it so much I bought the Hot Body Year Round book by creator Cassey Ho.
I was never a huge fan of fitness DVD’s, but I bought 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels and I have to say it kicks my butt and if you can stick to it, you will see results.
I love Zumba and again it’s something I can do at home using the Wii or by going to a class. It’s fun and you are moving your whole body. If you are looking for a fun workout with great music, Zumba will give you all that.
If you are Interested in finding out all about the latest exercise trends and getting fitness help, why not head on over to the Simply Health blog for some great tips and articles. I have to tell you, I didn’t even know that under water cycling was a thing, but that must be one hell of a workout and one I wouldn’t mind trying.
I wish I could say that I do all of these frequently, but it honestly depends on how I feel from week to week. I aim to get to the gym 3 times a week, we only play tennis when it’s fine weather. Sometimes the dogs won’t go for a walk and sometimes my body aches that much from the 30 Day Shred that for days after doing it, I decide to avoid all forms of exercise. But 2 years ago I wasn’t doing any of this and I honestly can’t imagine going back to how I was before. I love that after workout feeling. When you are so tired but satisfied with yourself. When I workout I sleep like a baby and I have so much more energy.
